When we progress in our careers to take on a board role, we quickly realise that the quality of our judgement (over time) has become the primary determinant of our reputation and extent of our influence. We also discover that our technical knowledge and expertise are less critical than they were before. Sat at the board table, we are faced with taking decisions in an environment which is characterised by much greater ambiguity. Political considerations, corporate reputation and external dynamics must also be taken into account when we make decisions. Our professional training is unlikely to have equipped us fully for this challenge.
